Troop 19 Turkey Campout 2008

On the weekend of November 14-16, Troop 19 held its annual Turkey Campout at Camp Carpenter. In this very old tradition that has been around before my time, the troop roasts turkeys in foil-lined boxes over campfires starting Saturday morning. The "ovens" are prepared in troop meetings weeks before. Potatoes, vegetable dishes, and deserts are cooked in dutch ovens.

Though it rained Friday night and all morning, it stopped just in time for dinner at 2:00 pm. Some families joined the troop just for the meal. This year, Dan D. gave the blessing in Hebrew. Then we dug into delicious helpings of turkey, stuffing, squash, beans, mashed potatoes, and rolls. There was a small competition between 2 patrols for the best dutch over peach cobbler, won by the patrol who had the least coal ashes! After cleanup, the troop played football and then later, played a game of Capture the Flag in the dark.

The best part about the weekend I think was when Tony Harrison's dog marked Devin Champagne and Jeremy Sayer's tent.
